6 Week Course

335 US dollars
Wooten Clayworks

Service Description

Carving, water etching, and slip-inlay can produce some of the most beautiful decorative surfaces in ceramics. This is an intro through advanced friendly course that explores a range of decorative techniques that Wooten has honed over the years. This course will explore traditional line carving, low relief carving, Mishima/slip inlay, and traditional water etching/water carving techniques. Students will learn both the pros and cons of different clay bodies for each technique and how to choose glazes that highlight these techniques. While this course is a great introduction to water etching and carving, it will not cover Wooten’s specific approach to raw water etching. To Bring: Notebook/sketchbook and writing utensil. Old clothes or attire you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Your favorite pottery tools. Tool kits will be available for purchase on the first day of class for $15. If students would prefer to bring in tools for class on their own, the following will be required for this class: a metal rib, wooden rib, needle tool, wire tool, sponge, wooden knife, fettling knife, and trimming tools. Calipers will be provided for class use, but an additional pair of calipers is always good to have if you want to save multiple measurements. This is a stacked class. No prior experience required. Ages 14+ Additional Costs: This course will require a V-Tip carving tool. We will order these tools in class together, or students may purchase their own outside of class. Expect an additional $25-$40 for required and recommended tools. Material and firing fees: $35 One bag of clay is included in the class cost (excluding Kota and brown bear which are available for an additional fee.) Additional clay can be purchased from Wooten Clayworks if desired. Pay As You Go: Please note, you pay a $100 deposit when you book this course. If you do not pay the remaining $200 for the course at the first class, we do offer payment plans. However, the price per class increases to $64 each class. The deposit amount will be put towards your last 2 classes in this case. Refunds are not available once the course has begun. We do our best to work with the community to offer them quality ceramic education and resources. For Intermediate/Advanced Students: You are welcome to sign up for this class if there are no upper-level classes available that work with your schedule. Instructor guidance for upper level students will take place after beginner demonstrations.
