About the Event
In this workshop, students will learn the basics of throwing off the hump and its many advantages and versatile uses!
During this in-studio event, maker Brian Chen will walk attendees through his studio flow of throwing off the hump from start to finish, and explain how it differs from working directly off the wheel head. He will begin with how he sets up his space and the nuances of adjusting the body to make centering easier. He will demonstrate how to approach taller or wider forms, like plates. He will discuss his over-all workflow and best ways of incorporating throwing and trimming off the hump into your own studio practice. In addition, he will work with students to make custom wire tools. These topics will be discussed with a focus on making functional work. Points involve throwing, altering, trimming, rethrowing, and handbuilding off the hump, and some last minute sculpting.
The price of this event does not include clay to work with or firing fees. Please feel welcomed to bring your own clay, or the studio will have bags of clay available for $25 + tax, and these can be split with other participants. We are offering a special firing fee, including glaze, of $25 per workload made from a 25lb block of clay. This fee is halved for participants who just want to bisque their work.
The event will include breakfast refreshments and a 45-minute lunch break. Feel free to bring your own lunch, snacks, and beverages! We seek to foster a community here, so if you want to bring enough to share, we always encourage pot-luck style gatherings.
