6 Week Course - Decorations Special Topic

Started Jan 18
100 US dollars
Wooten Clayworks

Service Description

Explore the possibilities of decorated, unglazed surfaces! If you’re looking to try new methods for finishing work other than just coating everything in glaze, this course is for you! Learn techniques to add tactility, color, and matte or burnished finishes to your pieces in this specialty decoration course. We will mix and apply bushing and dipping slips, englobes, terra sigillata (fine particle slip), and oxide washes. Students will explore making colored versions of slip and sigillata by testing mason stains and oxides. Taylor will show students how to put their new materials to use by demonstrating techniques for crafting ornate surfaces through inlaying, carving, slip trailing, burnishing, and painting with oxide washes to make textures pop! Class time will be dedicated to mixing, applying, and testing these materials. Taylor will show students how to make quick, flat tiles to practice on, but if you want to decorate pottery or sculpture, more time-consuming pieces will need to be made outside of class. If you do not have a membership but you want to make pieces on your own time, a lite membership is encouraged. Lite memberships are $10/week and allow for 2.5 hours/week of studio access. Without a membership, the course includes 2.5 hours access outside of class throughout the entire six week session. We will decorate both leatherhard and bone dry pieces, so feel free to start stocking up on work! The cost of this course is $300. Students pay an online deposit of $100 to register and will pay the remainder in person. Additional Costs: Glazing and Firing fee: $35 Special Topic fee: $25 One bag of clay is included in the class cost. Additional clay can be purchased from Wooten Clayworks. Certain glazes/techniques may have an upcharge. This is a stacked class. No prior experience required, but semi-advanced guidance will be provided. Ages 16+ Pay As You Go: Please note, a $100 deposit is paid when you book this course. If you do not pay the remaining $200 for the course at the first class, we do offer payment plans, however, the price per class increases to $58.
