Screenprinting Designs on Clay with Sam Briegel

In this one day, 8 hour workshop, students will learn how to design, expose, and utilize EZscreen for the purposes of screenprinting their own designs on clay surfaces! EZscreenprints are a commercial DIY screenprinting product that allow for an accessible, low-tech option for printing detailed designs on a variety of surfaces, including fabric, cardboard, paper, clay, etc. EZscreenprints are compatible with commercial underglaze products. Their website, ezscreenprint.com, has many resources for learning this technique. This one-day workshop should function as a supplementary resource to the website and provide hands-on practice for learning this fun technique.

In this workshop, students will learn the ways that Sam uses EZscreens in her work by creating layered multi-color prints. Students will learn how to print and transfer their one-color or two-color designs in a number of ways, including on rice paper, gelli plates, and directly on the clay. Makers will have the option of hand drawing their designs or generating a design digitally on Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop. The first half of the workshop will focus on designing and exposing the screen and the second half of the workshop will focus on learning multiple ways to print the design on clay. 

Students will come away with their own EZscreenprint Starter Kit, an 8.5’’x11’’ sheet of exposed designs, and the knowledge to make their own at home!

Skill Level: Beginner

*Students are not required to have their own Adobe Suite Software. They will be shown how to use it and a program will be available to try out.

EZ kits will need to be ordered in advance, so please register at least a week before the event. 

The event will include breakfast refreshments and a 45-minute lunch break. Feel free to bring your own lunch, snacks, and beverages! We seek to foster a community here, so if you want to bring enough to share, we always encourage pot-luck style gatherings.
