About the Event
Learn how to build large sculptures using Korean slab-building techniques!
Artist and professor Hayun Surl will demonstrate the process of crafting a ceramic figure using both wheel-throwing and slab-building techniques. There are various ways to construct a vessel using the wheel-throwing technique, but for this demonstration, he will primarily focus on the slab-building technique that he practiced during his time apprenticing in Korea.
The construction of the vessel's form requires a delicate balance between its interior and exterior, which enables the creation of reciprocal relationships both physically and philosophically. The envisioned figure will stand two feet tall and will be decorated with textures created using the wheel-throwing technique that visually validates the process. The demonstration will be divided into three segments.
First, Hayun will create a base that will serve as the foundation of the figure. During this stage, he will showcase the details of slab-building techniques, including the tools used and the application of merging clay, as well as the method of creating textured markings. Next, he will carefully locate the body of the figure, explaining how to achieve balance without relying on any additional supporting structures. Lastly, he will demonstrate the process of creating an expressive face for the figure, bringing it to life, and completing its overall appearance.
This workshop contains information suitable for students with a beginner or advanced level understanding of ceramics. Please note, this workshop is observational only.
